๐ฑ About German Chamomile
German Chamomile is an annual flowering herb that produces daisy-like flowers.
The plant is relatively compact and can be grown in containers or directly in garden soil when provided with suitable growing conditions.
Its small white flowers with yellow centers also make it an attractive choice for home gardens.
๐ฑ How to Grow German Chamomile from Seeds
1. Prepare the Soil
Choose a loose, well-draining growing medium.
For containers, you can use a good-quality potting mix containing garden soil, compost and material that helps drainage.
Remove weeds and break up compacted soil before sowing.
2. Sow the Seeds
German Chamomile seeds are small and can be surface-sown.
- Scatter the seeds over moist soil.
- Press them gently against the surface.
- Avoid covering them deeply.
- Keep the growing medium evenly moist.
- Use gentle watering so the seeds are not displaced.
Because chamomile seeds are small and benefit from light during germination, deep sowing should be avoided.
๐ฑ Germination
German Chamomile seeds can germinate in approximately 7โ14 days under suitable conditions.
Germination may vary depending on:
- Temperature
- Moisture
- Seed quality
- Growing medium
- Light
- Environmental conditions
โ๏ธ Sunlight Requirements
German Chamomile grows well in full sun to partial shade.
For good growth and flowering, choose a location that receives plenty of natural light.
For container gardening, place the pot where the plant can receive adequate sunlight while allowing good air circulation.
๐ฟ Soil Requirements
German Chamomile prefers well-draining soil.
A sandy-loam type growing medium can be suitable.
For container cultivation:
- Use a pot with drainage holes.
- Avoid heavy, compacted soil.
- Do not allow excess water to remain around the roots.
๐ง Watering German Chamomile
Keep the soil lightly and evenly moist while the seeds are germinating.
Once plants are established, water according to the moisture level of the soil.
Avoid excessive watering and waterlogging.
Container plants may require more frequent watering during hot and dry weather.
๐ฑ Thinning German Chamomile
If seedlings emerge too close together, thin them once they are established.
Allow enough space between plants for:
- Healthy growth
- Good air circulation
- Easier watering
- Better access to sunlight
๐ผ Flowering & Harvesting
German Chamomile produces small daisy-like flowers.
Flowers can be picked once they are fully open.
For gardeners growing chamomile primarily as an ornamental herb, regular harvesting of mature flowers can also be part of routine plant care.
๐ชด Growing German Chamomile in Pots
German Chamomile is suitable for container gardening.
For best results:
- Choose a container with drainage holes.
- Use well-draining potting soil.
- Surface-sow the seeds.
- Keep the soil moist during germination.
- Place the pot in a sunny location.
- Avoid overcrowding.
It can be grown on a balcony, terrace or home garden where suitable sunlight is available.

Almost all seeds germinated. Excited for the flowers to bloom.
I planted the German chamomile seeds on Dec 17 and in 4 days I already see little leaves popping up!
I had surface sowed the seeds (scattered them on the surface and didn't cover with soil) since chamomile seeds require light to germinate. I had also bottom watered the container once after sowing.
What a delight to see little plants coming up! Can't wait to see them grow into dainty flowers! ๐ฑ
